How will it look if a person whose waist length is 28 inches wears a jean sized 34 inches? Too big? Well, this might be a problem while you choose a chandelier. Just like how you know the size of the jeans that fit you, you must also know the size of the chandelier that suits your room.

A perfect lighting fixture enhances the mood of the entire room and makes it look elegant. In a small room, a huge chandelier looks overwhelming to the eyes of the viewer while a small chandelier in a large room becomes insignificant

How to determine the right size of your chandelier?

It might look like too much math in determining the right size of your chandelier because the ratio of the length and width of your room and the chandelier must match in such a way that it does not look weird.

Determining the width of the chandelier:

To determine the perfect width of your chandelier, you must follow these steps:

  • Measure the length and width of your room by using a measuring tape.
  • Add the two values.
  • Convert the value into inches. This is the right diameter for your chandelier.

For example, if your room is 11’*19’, then the diameter of your chandelier must be 30 inches. If your chandelier is to be fixed on top of a dining table, then the length of your chandelier must be between one-half to two-thirds of the length of your table.

If you are planning to hang two chandeliers you can divide the table width by the number of chandeliers plus one to find the diameter per chandelier. Use the same value to determine the distance between the two chandeliers.

Determining the height of the chandelier:

  • Measure the height from the ceiling to the floor. Make sure that the installation location is at least 4ft away from the wall.
  • Multiply the resulting value with the number 3.

For example, if your ceiling is 9ft high, then your chandelier must not be more than 27 inches in height. If you have a large room and a low ceiling height, you must find the chandelier that matches both the criteria.

Determining the chain length:

The chain length depends on the height from your ceiling to the tabletop. According to designers, if your ceiling is less than 8ft high, then the distance between the tabletop and your dining room chandelier or a drawing-room chandelier must be 30 to 34 inches. If it is more than 8ft, you can consider the distance to be 36 to 40 inches.
